SHANNON SHARPE: BLACK EXCELLENCE AND RESILIENCE

S hannon Sharpe has rocketed to the upper echelons of American pop culture over the past 12 months. The New York Times named him one of the top 10 “Breakout Stars” of 2024 for his work on the wildly popular Club Shay Shay podcast. Earlier this year, ESPN expanded Sharpe’s role on First Take, its highest-rated program, with a

multi-year contract. Recently, Sharpe and ESPN parted ways, a transition that came as he worked to navigate civil legal challenges. While he has not been charged with any crime, he has faced intense public scrutiny. Through it all, Club Shay Shay remains a cultural force, drawing millions of viewers and continuing to attract high-profile guests.

But long before the spotlight, the headlines, and the Hall of Fame jacket, there was Savannah State University, the place Sharpe credits for giving him the foundation to become the man he is today. “I was one of the top recruits in Georgia coming out of high school, but I didn’t meet the academic requirements to go

to Division 1,” Sharpe told HBCU Times. “The only school that stuck by me and believed in me was Savannah State. Coach Bill Davis had just gotten the job, and he came to see me.” Initially, Sharpe resisted. He told Davis he wanted to play at a bigger school. “He said, ‘Son, you can do that at Savannah State,’” Sharpe recalled. When
